Eek! I am SO excited because we start school on MONDAY!! I have to admit a week ago, I was not quite ready, but now I feel like a child on Christmas morning. Because I refuse to plan over summer vacation, we have been busy the past two weeks preparing for our new school year.
First we had to sort through our play/school room mess. Which, I am embarrassed to say took FOUR HOURS!
After that it was time to assemble portfolios, sort school books, and get the school supplies out. I may have went a bit overboard on the school supplies, but this is the ONLY time I buy each year. So, the supplies have to last!
For the girls we will be using Heart of Dakota-Preparing. We have separate notebooks for Science, History and Grammar.
Their portfolios will contain vocabulary words, Health notes (they are using Easy Peasy for health and each week I will have them write a paragraph sharing what they learned), tests (math, grammar and spelling) and a miscellaneous section for items that do not fall into the other categories.
The boy’s portfolio will be separated into four sections. I do his in seasons, so we have Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer.
Their school shelves contain the books they will be using each week, their school box with school supplies, and their library books.
The top shelf of our school book shelves contain my teachers manuals, and books we will be using this school year, but maybe aren’t being used yet.
Each child will have a Weekly Check List containing their tasks for the week. They will check off each item as it is completed. (I can NOT find where I first found these checklists so if it was you-feel free to give yourself credit in the comments!!)
There are MANY moms out there who have contributed some awesome printables to go along with Preparing. I am a penny pincher, and tend to stay on the less is more side of things, so I only printed out a few of the files.
My must have printables for Preparing are:
Bible Quiet Time Cards-I LOVE these and think they will come in handy for the girls quiet time. It also gives them a reference point for their scripture each week. I prefer this over the ones already typed up as one can use whichever version of the bible they choose.
Vocabulary Words– I was on the fence about this one but opted in because without it there is a LOT of writing for my youngest daughter, and my oldest daughter tends to write slow. I love how these already have the words on them, and a place for an image. I think we are going to have them choose 3 out of the 5 to learn.
Materials List– I am the world’s WORST at having materials ready in advance. This sheet tells me what I need each unit, and each day, so IF I remember to check it BEFORE doing my biweekly grocery shopping we SHOULD be prepared for Preparing :).
My boy will be completing literature unit studies this year for preschool and will also be using Hooked on Phonics preschool for letter recognition. We will use some Before Five in Row selections as well as other popular books.
I printed off worksheets, lap books, and other fun hands on activity ideas that go along with each book. I look forward to sharing these with you each week as well as the girl’s journey through Preparing.
This is what I *plan* on our days to look like : Our 2015-2016 School Year Schedule
How have you been preparing for the new school year?
